The Timberland History

Nathan Swartz, a Russian-American shoemaker, started working as an apprentice stitcher in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1928. The Abington Shoe Company was established in South Boston, a short distance away just a few years later, in 1933. With his sons Herman and Sidney joining him, Swartz purchased a 50% investment in Abington in 1952.

The Abington Shoe Company expanded consistently until the 1960s when Swartz came up with a novel method of producing shoes. He discovered injection moulding. Abington’s boots are significantly more waterproof than anything else on the market thanks to this ground-breaking technique, which also sped up production.

Due to this technical advancement, the totally waterproof leather Timberland boot was developed in 1973, propelling the business to new heights. Nathan Swartz was able to retire in 1968, and one of his sons, Herman, took over the business.

After the Timberland boot’s commercial breakthrough in 1978, Herman Swartz changed the company’s name. After Herman Swartz retired in 1986, his brother Sidney bought Timberland and then went public with it in 1987.

Timberland became a well-known brand by expanding its product line to include clothes and accessories. Three generations of the Swartz family transformed a modest Boston shoe firm into a beloved and well-known global fashion brand until Jeffrey Swartz, Sidney’s son, eventually sold Timberland to VF Corporation in 2011.
